Manipur ethnic violence: Kuki-Zo Council lifts indefinite shutdown, opposes free movement
The Kuki-Zo Council of strife-stricken Manipur officially announced the lifting of the indefinite shutdown previously called by it on Thursday. The decision to end the shutdown comes after thorough deliberation, a statement by the Kuki-Zo council said.
The statement read it is imperative to make it clear that while the shutdown has been lifted, free movement, as announced by the Centre shall be vehemently opposed by the Kuki-Zo people.
The free movement of people between Meitei and Kuki-dominated areas, which began last week, came following a special directive by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Security forces, in coordination with the Manipur Police, have taken extensive measures to ensure the smooth transit of people while maintaining law and order in the state, which has witnessed 22 months of ethnic clashes, claiming the lives of over 250 people and rendering thousands homeless.
“Until justice is duly served for the Kuki-Zo people, any move toward unrestricted free movement will be vigorously opposed. The Kuki-Zo Council remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring that the sacrifices of our martyrs, including Lalgouthang Singsit, are honoured through the achievement of rightful justice for the Kuki-Zo people -a separate political administration to ensure justice, peace and progress for our people,” the statement added.
“We call on all relevant authorities to recognise and respect our legitimate demands, and to work towards a peaceful resolution that will bring justice and security to the Kuki-Zo people,” the statement read further.
Since the conflict erupted in May 2023, shattering trust between the communities, Meiteis fled the Kuki-dominated hills, while Kukis abandoned Meitei-majority areas.
Since then, all essential supplies such as gas cylinders and maintenance equipment have been transported via trucks to Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, and Senapati to prevent shortages. Additionally, efforts to maintain a steady supply chain to Moreh, Kangpokpi, and Churachandpur have been ongoing, ensuring that residents do not face disruptions in necessities.
