BSF jawan injured after being attacked by smuggler at India-Bangladesh border
A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan was injured in an attack by smugglers while attempting to prevent cattle smuggling along the India-Bangladesh border in North Bengal.
Acting on a tip-off, a special ambush team from the Siliguri Sector of the North Bengal Frontier intercepted a group of Indian smugglers near the International Border Barrier Fence (IBBF) on March 27. The smugglers, including 25-year-old Mohd Muzzafar Hussain from Darjeeling, were attempting to transport cattle across the border, where a group from Bangladesh was allegedly waiting to receive them.
As the BSF patrol challenged the smugglers, some fled with the cattle. The jawans pursued and seized the livestock when a hidden smuggler fired a pistol at a BSF constable. The shot misfired, but as a BSF jawan attempted to detain him, the smuggler attacked, hitting him on the head with the weapon and attempting to strangle him.
Despite his injuries, Constable Lalit Rout held onto the smuggler until other personnel arrived and overpowered the attacker. The BSF seized a pistol with one live round, a keypad mobile phone, and four cattle from the apprehended smuggler.
According to officials, the arrested individual has a history of border-related criminal activities. He was handed over to Phansidewa Police Station in Darjeeling district for further investigation.
In the past two weeks, the BSF North Bengal Frontier has seized 60 cattle, 3,100 bottles of codeine-based syrup, 17.5 kg of ganja, and other contraband items from different locations under its jurisdiction. The total estimated value of the seized goods is Rs 23,04,998.
