CSK vs MI, IPL 2025: How can CSK qualify for the playoffs after 9-wicket defeat to MI?
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are in all sorts of trouble as far as qualifying for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 playoffs are concerned. On Sunday, April 20, the five-time champions slumped to a nine-wicket defeat to the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
After the loss, MS Dhoni’s CSK stayed at the bottom of the table with four points following wins in only two out of eight matches. In IPL 2024, the Super Kings won seven out of 14 matches, but missed out after Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) edged them out on net run rate.
In a 10-team competition, sides need at least eight wins to go through to the playoffs without having to depend on net run rate. For the Super Kings to directly make their way through to the playoffs, they need to win all their remaining six matches in the league stage.
MI vs CSK, IPL 2025 Highlights
For CSK to have any chance of going through with seven wins, they need to improve their net run rate of -1.392, the worst amongst all the teams in the tournament. They began their campaign with a win over MI at the Chepauk, but things have gone haywire for them since then.

Suryakumar, Rohit crush CSK
After being put in to bat first, the Super Kings put up a decent score of 176 for the loss of five wickets. Shivam Dube scored 50 runs, after which Ravindra Jadeja’s unbeaten 53 off 35 injected momentum into the innings. 17-year-old debutant Ayush Mhatre also chipped in with an impressive 32-run knock.
MI romped home with 26 balls to spare. Ryan Rickelton scored 24 off 19, but it was Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav’s unbeaten 114-run stand that took them past the finish line. While Rohit racked up an unbeaten 76 off 45 balls, Suryakumar raced to score 68 and also hit the winning six off Matheesha Pathirana.
