Dino Morea says Raaz was a bigger hit than Devdas. Here’s how

Vikram Bhatt’s Raaz and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas were released in 2002, but Devdas, led by Shah Rukh Khan, created more noise and grabbed all the major awards. Dino Morea, who played the lead in Raaz alongside Bipasha Basu, claimed that, contrary to popular opinion, Raaz was a bigger hit than Devdas.

In an interview with Pinkvilla, Dino said, “That film was a big rage. Devdas also released in the same year, but if you look at the numbers, in terms of how much we spent on our film and how much we earned versus Devdas, ours was a bigger hit of that year.”

But despite all its merits, Raaz won only a couple of awards, while Devdas swept the major trophies. Dino shared, “Even though we just won two awards, we didn’t win anything for music. The music of that film was so popular, people still listen to it. But there isn’t a single award for that music. We got the new jodi award, but no awards for music. Devdas won everything that year; they took all the awards.”

Raaz featured songs like Jo Bhi Kasmein, Main Agar Saamne, and Yeh Sheher Hai, among others. The film’s music was composed by Nadeem-Shravan, while the lyrics were penned by Sameer.

Dino mentioned that Devdas was marketed as a bigger film and that there was a perception of it being grander. But he said, “If you look at expenses and revenue, Raaz was a much more profitable film.”

As per Bollywood Hungama, Devdas, made on a budget of over Rs 40 crore, earned Rs 90 crore worldwide. Raaz was reportedly made on a budget of Rs 5 crore and earned Rs 31 crore.

In the same interview, Dino Morea also opened up about his breakup with Bipasha during the shoot of Raaz. Vikram Bhatt had earlier said their relationship affected the film.
