Inzamam-ul-Haq defends Babar Azam amid ‘rough patch’

Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has thrown his weight behind Babar Azam, urging critics to show patience as the star batter fights through a dip in form.

Babar, who has been struggling to regain his best touch, hasn’t scored a century since August 2023, when he smashed 151 against Nepal.

His performances have come under intense scrutiny, especially after Pakistan’s disappointing ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign.

However, despite his recent struggles, the former chief selector extended his support to Babar during a media interaction.

He acknowledged that while the star batter is going through a rough patch, Pakistan’s struggles run deeper than individual performances.

“Babar Azam is a top player. Everyone goes through a rough patch, but the national team hasn’t been playing good cricket for the past few months,” he said.

Inzamam further linked Pakistan’s struggles over the past two years to a lack of long-term vision and inconsistent decision-making.

“In the past two years, the performance of the Pakistan team has declined. If we don’t work in the right direction, we will continue to struggle,” he remarked.

The legendary batter criticized the frequent changes in coaches, management, and players, stating that such instability has a direct impact on the team’s performance.

“Changing management, coaches, and players repeatedly will not solve the problem. We need to sit down and analyze where the mistakes are being made,” he emphasized.

Inzamam-ul-Haq further urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to trust the management and players, calling for a long-term vision rather than short-term fixes.

“Trust the management and the players, and work together to identify where the mistakes are. Changing coaches and players repeatedly will not solve the problem,” he reiterated.
