Kerala CPI Marxist workers detain cops kannur – Over 50 CPI(M) workers charged for detaining police, freeing accused in Kannur – Kerala News

More than 50 members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) have been accused of detaining police officers who were attempting to take a man into custody, authorities said on Friday.

The incident took place on Thursday afternoon near Thalassery, where police were trying to arrest a CPI(M) activist accused of attacking officers a day earlier during a temple festival, according to a Thalassery police officer.

“When we tried to take him into custody, more than 50 CPI(M) activists locked us in a room and freed the accused,” the officer said.

Police said the alleged attack on officers occurred when they intervened in a dispute between BJP and CPI(M) supporters at the festival.

Senior BJP leader PK Krishnadas criticised the state government’s handling of the situation. “The incident is a proof of complete failure of the Home Department. CPI(M)’s criminal gangs have taken over the charge of the Home Department,” he said.

Kannur, where the incident occurred, is considered a CPI(M) stronghold and is the home district of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
