Kho Kho World Cup: India men and women teams book quarterfinal spot with commanding wins
The Indian men’s and women’s teams advanced to the quarterfinals of the Kho Kho World Cup in New Delhi on Wednesday. The men’s team achieved a decisive 70-38 victory against Peru, while the women’s team overwhelmed Iran with a 100-16 win.
The men’s team displayed their championship potential with a commanding performance, marked by tactical brilliance and athletic excellence. A strong opening set the tone as they dominated the initial stages of Turn 1, although Peru managed a brief defensive stand in Turn 2.
Under the leadership of Wazir Pratik Waikar, the hosts regained control and concluded the first round with a solid 36-point lead. The momentum carried through Turn 2 with exceptional performances from Aditya Pote, Siva Reddy, and Sachin Bhargo. By Turn 4, India had extended their tally to 70 points, sealing a comprehensive victory and solidifying their position at the top of their group at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.
In the women’s match, India began aggressively, eliminating Iran’s first batch within just 33 seconds. Ashwini spearheaded the attack, while Meenu delivered an outstanding performance with multiple ‘touch points,’ helping India accumulate 50 points in Turn 1.
The relentless assault continued across all four Turns, highlighted by a spectacular 6-minute-8-second ‘Dream Run’ in Turn 3, effectively clinching the match. Wazir Nirmala’s tactical acumen, along with contributions from skipper Priyanka Ingle, Nirmala Bhati, and Nasreen, established India as the team to beat in the tournament.
