Maharashtra unveils new models for slum rehabilitation project in Mumbai
The Maharashtra government has introduced a new model for Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) housing in Mumbai, with a blueprint currently being prepared for potential implementation in other states across the country.
As part of this initiative, a 30-storey SRA project named ‘Shreeji Sharan’ has been constructed on Kandivali (West) Link Road in Mumbai.
The project accommodates approximately 700 poor families and includes facilities such as a wellness zone, spa, yoga room, community hall, a primary hospital within the society, podcast studio, creche, library, guest house, reception lobby, and podium parking. Each flat measures 300 square feet and includes access to a gym.
This model introduces elements that are typically found in private housing projects, now made available in a slum rehabilitation context.
Beneficiaries of the project have shared positive feedback regarding the available facilities. BJP MLA Yogesh Sagar stated that the perception of SRA housing is shifting due to the inclusion of such amenities.
Builder Mehul Sanghvi of the Akyam project under Shreeji Sharan said the initiative was undertaken as part of corporate social responsibility (CSR), with an emphasis on changing community perspectives along with housing.
Following this pilot project, similar infrastructure and service models are being considered for future SRA developments across Mumbai.
