NBA: LeBron James responds to Kevin Gates over targeting wife Savanna
The NBA Playoffs heated up off the court when rapper Kevin Gates made controversial remarks about LeBron James’ wife, Savannah James. This sparked major backlash and a direct response from the Los Angeles Lakers superstar.
In a now-viral Instagram video posted on April 19, Gates criticized Savannah’s presence and demeanor during games. “I don’t like the way Savannah looks at LeBron. I like the way them white women look at LeBron,” Gates said, before comparing her to a “warden,” claiming she controls LeBron’s actions.
Fans, celebrities, and media figures quickly condemned the rapper’s statements as disrespectful and inappropriate. The criticism intensified after Gates was spotted courtside at the Lakers’ Game 2 matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves, which many interpreted as a taunt directed at James.
LeBron James responds: “Kings don’t concern themselves with the opinions of peasants”
LeBron is known for his calm demeanor, LeBron James responded to the controversy without mentioning Gates directly. On April 20, he posted an affectionate photo with Savannah on Instagram, accompanied by a caption that spoke volumes:
“Kings don’t concern themselves with the opinions of peasants. Where to next Queen?!?! Let’s get it! ”
The post was widely praised for its dignity and class, with fans lauding LeBron for defending his wife in a respectful and empowering manner.
Gates doubles down despite backlash
Despite public criticism, Gates didn’t apologize. In a follow-up video, the rapper said, “The truth hurts, but it heals. And ‘Bron, I love you.” He added that his comments came from a place of emotional honesty, saying, “Long as you being celebrated, I don’t care who don’t like me.”
Even while expressing admiration for LeBron, Gates stood by his earlier statements, fueling further debate on social media.
Savannah James has largely stayed out of the limelight. She and LeBron, who met in high school in Akron, Ohio, have been together for over two decades. They share three children: Bronny, Bryce, and Zhuri.
While Savannah hasn’t responded publicly, LeBron’s message made it clear that attacks on his family won’t be tolerated.
The controversy comes during a critical moment in the NBA Playoffs. The Lakers, who lost Game 1 to the Timberwolves, bounced back in Game 2, with LeBron showing why he remains one of the league’s most impactful players, even as one of the oldest NBA players.
