Prithvi Shaw car attack – Court rejects influencer’s plea to cancel case over attacking Prithvi Shaw’s car
The Bombay High Court on Thursday refused to cancel the FIR registered against social media influencer Sapna Gill for attacking cricketer Prithvi Shaw’s car after he denied selfies in Mumbai. The court observed that the allegations against Shaw had substance and stated that it intends to review the chargesheet.
Justices Sarang Kotwal and SM Modak rejected Gill’s plea, noting that the First Information Report (FIR) “clearly makes out some offence” and that there is “some material against you.” Justice Kotwal advised Gill’s lawyer to consider filing a discharge plea in the trial court. “We will not quash,” the court said.
The altercation occurred on February 15 when Gill and her friends approached Shaw for selfies, which he declined. The complaint filed by Shaw’s friend, Ashish Yadav, alleges that the group, led by Gill, then attacked Shaw’s car and threatened to file false cases unless they were paid Rs 50,000.
Gill and others were arrested by the Mumbai Police based on Yadav’s complaint, but she denied the allegations. Gill has also initiated legal proceedings against Shaw and certain police officers.
The influencer petitioned the High Court to quash the charges filed against her.
The court rejected Gill’s petition saying it will not cancel the FIR at this stage and directed Additional Public Prosecutor JP Yagnik to provide a copy of the chargesheet for review. The hearing has been adjourned to April 3.
