Supreme Court warns ‘oversmart’ Samay Raina over remarks in Canada show
The Supreme Court, while hearing a petition filed by Ranveer Allahbadia, on Monday took note of his fellow YouTuber Samay Raina’s remarks about the ‘India’s Got Latent’ controversy during his live show in Canada. Both the YouTubers had come under fire after a video from Raina’s YouTube show went viral, sparking widespread condemnation and outrage. Multiple FIRs were filed against them in different cities.
Without naming Samay Raina, the Supreme Court on Monday said, “One of them went to Canada and spoke about all of this.” The top court’s remark came after Raina joked about the ‘India’s Got Latent’ controversy during his show in Canada.
“These youngsters are being oversmart…they think we are an outdated generation probably…one of them has gone to Canada and spoke there…they don’t know the jurisdiction which this Court enjoys and what probably can be done…We don’t want to because they are young, we understand,” Justice Surya Kant said.
In February, comedian Samay Raina, in his first show in Canada since ‘India’s Got Latent’ show swirled into controversy, joked about the row and humorously thanked the audience for ‘paying’ his legal fees through ticket purchases. During his show in Edmonton, Raina humorously referenced the entire controversy in his gig.
A fan, Shubham Dutta, shared his experience on Facebook, describing how the comedian, despite visible stress, managed to engage the audience with his wit. However, after the fan later deleted the post, it was shared on many people’s timelines.
During his act, Samay joked about the ongoing controversy. “Iss show pe bahut mauka ayega, jahan aapko lag sakta hai ki main bahot funny kuch bol sakta hoon, par tab Beerbiceps ko yaad kar lena bhai (There will be many moments in this show where you might think I could say something really funny, but in those moments, just remember BeerBiceps, brother,” Dutta’s post read.
Raina concluded his stand-up show with the line, “Shayad samay kharab chal raha hai mera, par yaad rakhna doston, main samay hoon ( Maybe my time is bad right now, but remember, my friends—I am the time).”
