Tata Sierra spotted testing ahead of launch. Check details

Tata Motors is all set to bring back one of its iconic SUVs, the Tata Sierra, but this time in a modern avatar. The upcoming Tata Sierra internal combustion engine (ICE) was shown at the Bharat Mobility Global Auto Expo 2025.

The upcoming Sierra ICE variant was recently spotted testing in a heavily camouflaged prototype, hinting at the SUV’s final production-spec design. Tata is expected to launch the Sierra ICE first, followed by the Sierra EV in the second half of 2025.

A near-production version of the SUV was showcased at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2025, and the latest test mule sightings provide fresh insights into its design, features, and powertrain options.

The Tata Sierra’s strongest appeal lies in its nostalgic yet contemporary design. Despite the camouflage, certain signature design elements were visible. Up front, the SUV sports a high-mounted bonnet, a split headlamp setup with sleek connected LED DRLs, and a gloss black grille complemented by a chunky silver skid plate for a rugged look.

The rear design follows a bold, upright stance with a flat tailgate and connected LED taillights for a futuristic touch. The test prototype also revealed a rear wiper, while previous iterations showcased flush-fitting door handles, squared wheel arches, and thick body claddingsall adding to the Sierra’s muscular appeal.

Unlike the original 3-door Sierra from the 1990s, the new-generation model adopts a more practical 5-door layout.

Tata is expected to offer multiple interior colour themes based on the variant. The Auto Expo model featured yellow accents, enhancing the cabin’s visual appeal. It is expected that the Sierra will feature a chunky four-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated Tata logo, which is now a common design element across Tata’s cars.

Other safety features include ABS with EBD, a 360-degree camera, electronic stability control, tyre pressure monitoring system, and up to 7 airbags.

It is expected that the Sierra ICE will debut with two engine options:
A new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine Expected to deliver 168bhp & 280Nm torque

Both engines are expected to be paired with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic.

The Sierra EV, set for launch later, is expected to offer multiple battery pack options with a claimed range of around 500km on a single charge. It is likely to share its electric powertrain with the upcoming Harrier EV.

Tata Motors is aggressively expanding its SUV lineup, with the Harrier EV launch expected in the coming weeks. At the same time, development on the Sierra ICE and EV is in full swing, with the latest test mule sightings confirming its near-production status.

With Tata having filed a design patent for the final production model of the Sierra, the SUV is inching closer to its much-anticipated comeback. More details are expected in the coming months as Tata prepares for its grand launch later this year.
