Tensions rise along LoC as cross-border firing strains India-Pakistan ceasefire
Cross-border firing incidents along the Line of Control (LoC) in the south of the Pir Panjal region have increased sharply over the past ten days, with reports of sniping, firing, and attempts by Pakistan’s Border Action Team (BAT) to breach Indian defences. Sources within the Indian Army say that while the ceasefire agreement remains officially intact, these incidents are being dealt with swiftly at the local level.
According to Army sources, multiple intrusion attempts in the Krishna Ghati sector of Jammu and Kashmir have been thwarted, resulting in heavy losses for the infiltrators.
Last week, Pakistani troops engaged in small-arms fire and blasts along the LoC, prompting a strong retaliatory response from the Indian Army. Despite diplomatic engagements to address the situation, the violations have continued.
General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the White Knight Corps, Lt. Gen. Navin Sachdeva, reviewed the security situation in the Reasi and Rajouri sectors and commended the alertness of the troops in maintaining stability in the region.
While official statements emphasise that the ceasefire remains in place, the increasing number of hostilities suggests otherwise. The Indian Army remains on high alert and prepared to respond firmly to any further provocations.
These incidents come nearly four years after India and Pakistan reaffirmed their ceasefire agreement along the LoC in February 2021. The agreement, reached between the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries, aimed to reduce tensions and maintain peace along the border. However, the recent escalation, particularly in the south of the Pir Panjal region, raises concerns about the durability of the agreement.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha reiterated India’s firm stance on ceasefire violations, stating that the Indian Army is giving a strong response.
He emphasised the coordinated efforts between security forces and the Jammu and Kashmir Police in tackling cross-border terrorism, asserting that maintaining peace in the region remains the top priority.
